- For many years, the field of criminology has been dominated by traditional versions of differential association theory and strain theory. In the past several decades, each of these perspectives has been advanced in an important way: differential association by Akers, and strain theory by Agnew. For each perspective, briefly discuss the traditional statement or version of the theory, and then relay in detail the advance on this theory made by each of the more recent theorists. Second, describe the empirical support for each revised theory. Finally, discuss one policy implication for each revised theory.
- Gottfredson and Hirschi’s “general theory of crime” represents a major attack on traditional sociological theories of crime. First, review the major components of Gottfredson and Hirschi’s theory. Second, compare and contrast their theory with Sampson and Laub’s “age-graded theory.” Third, discuss the level of empirical support for each theory. Finally, discuss one policy implication for each theory.
