1.) (20 points) Brittle Coloumb-Mohr Find the safety factors based on Brittle Coulomb-Mohr for the loaded bracket shown for the two points: largest tensile stress and largest compression stress. The part is made from ASTM No. 60 Cast Iron (use material strength values from Shigley). Neglect transverse shear stress. Plot these two stress points on a Brittle Coulomb-Mohr stress envelope (a worksheet is available in the Excel file used with a previous HW for you to print) and graphically confirm the numerical results. An extra credit problem (EC2) will be available based on this configuration but using Von Mises stress for comparison.
2.) (10 points) Fracture Mechanics A 10 mm deep radial crack (aligned with the longitudinal direction, as shown) is discovered in 16” Schedule 80 pipe (406 mm OD, 21.44 mm wall thickness) made from 4340 steel (yield strength 860 MPa) carrying 35 MPa of internal pressure. Treat this as a thick walled cylinder. Calculate and compare:
a. The safety factor against yield failure of the un- cracked pipe based on DET on the outside surface
b. The safety factor against fracture of the cracked pipe
