Capacity planning is the process of determining the resources required to meet the future demands of your project. This involves ensuring that appropriate resources, such as people with the necessary skills, sufficient time availability, and required funding, are available when needed.
The process of raising production capacity in advance of a strong demand is known as lead capacity strategy or lead strategy. For instance, if you are a store, you could need to bring on many seasonal employees for the winter season or for a single sale. Anticipating increased client traffic allows you to quickly add more manpower and effectively staff your team.
Lead capacity planning and lag strategy planning are blended to form match strategy planning. To attain the desired resource utilization, capacity needs to be incrementally increased in small steps during the match strategy design phase. For instance, using the restaurant business as an example, a floor manager may have many staff members available for the evening. You can hire extra servers to cover till the crowds thin out if you have an unexpectedly huge celebration.
Jack of All Fades Barbershop was established in 1957 and has been a successful company. The establishment has been utilizing a level staff of barbers five days a week for the past few years. Popular with both residents and visiting visitors, they are a well-known business with a Tuesday through Saturday schedule. The barbers are mostly idle Tuesday through Friday, with a few peak times between lunch and after 4 p.m. each day. All the barbers are very busy on Friday afternoon and throughout Saturday, with long waits and some clients turned away.
- Which capacity planning choices should this barbershop consider?
- What analysis would you do on these options?
- How should the possibilities be compared, and what information should be gathered?
