Essay Plan for CL407 CW1

Introduction (up to 10% or 150 words)

The job of the introduction is to identify the focus of the assignment and the main topic, in this case the one aspect of patient care chosen to discuss. As this is a reflective essay based on a patient observation, there are some essential points that must be included.

  • What essential elements must be included in the introduction for healthcare essays?
    • Type of essay (reflection)
    • Focus of essay (topic)
    • Confidentiality – patient and Trust (HCPC)

Body – paragraphs (one for each main point of the essay) (80% +/- or 1200 words)

The body of the essay will include (as a guide), around 4 x 300-word paragraphs and each of these will reflect on the patient care witnessed during the observation (as the starting point) and a key topic for discussion that relates to the chosen aspect of care. The reflective cycle by John Driscoll can be used to develop the discussion.

  • Having chosen and then researched the main subject, what key elements have you decided to discuss in the paragraphs within the body of the essay?
  • There are 3 learning outcomes that must be met within this essay, will the planned content address them?
  • LO1: Demonstrate the development of the reflective strategies for their professional career within Operating Department practice.
    • Did you observe something, think about it (reflect), learn about it, explore it and discuss it?
  • LO2: Identify the relationship between contemporary evidence, guidelines for best practice and perioperative care delivery.
    • Did you learn about it by reading appropriate books, guidance, policy and research evidence?
    • Have you used this to support your written work?
  • LO3: Discuss the contribution of perioperative care throughout the typical patient pathway.
    • There must be evidence that you understand the value of evidence-based practice and its impact on the quality of care
    • As a result of your newly acquired knowledge, how will your practice change and what impact could this have on patient care

Conclusion (up to 10% or 150 words)

  • The purpose of the conclusion is to summarise the main points/ ideas / arguments in the essay and link them back to the overall topic / purpose / focus of the essay. The closing words should identify what has been learnt as a result of the exploration of the topic; the marker will want to see how the student has developed their knowledge and understanding as a result of undertaking the task.
