Part One: In an effort to increase cultural literacy in an experiential manner, you will be required to attend a cultural event this semester– either a play, concert, dance performance, poetry reading (there are many events at College’s many campuses for FREE), or a museum (FYI museums are generally closed on Mondays). You cannot use West Wind at the OMA
** Remember to take a “selfie” of you at the event as well as a picture of a program that includes the date of the event. I will not grade an essay that does not include these 2 pictures!!**
Part Two: Next, write a well-developed essay that describes what you believe the “art” is trying to communicate. If you go to a museum or a Spoken Word event, you will need to choose one piece to focus on for your thesis and supporting paragraphs!!!
You are not expected to do any outside research in order to write your essay; however, it may make your paper stronger – just make sure to CITE your sources. Even if you are using the information next to the painting – you need to clarify and cite this as a source!! Also, even if you do not quote a source directly, you still MUST cite it.
Your essay must be in MLA format.
Part Three: Write a thorough paragraph that analyzes your art’s connection to the roots of Western Civilization? Is there a clear connection? How — is it through aesthetics or themes or subject matter? Does the art reject Western Civilization or have no relationship?
If so, what makes you say this. BE SPECIFIC!!!!
Possible format for Essay:
Introduction – Introduce the “art” – where, when, and how did you see / experience it. Also, give a brief statement concerning how your “art” connects with Western Civilization. Your final sentence should be your thesis explaining what YOU think the artist was trying to communicate by creating their “art”.
Supporting paragraphs – use these to develop your thesis. Please use specific details from the “art” to support what you think the artist is trying to communicate and offer analysis for your conclusions. Make sure one paragraph develops how the “art” connects to Western Civilization.
Conclusion – restate your thesis as well as your personal evaluation of the “art”. Did you enjoy the experience? Would you recommend it to a friend? Why or why not – be specific!!
