Cultural Event Essay
The Orlando Museum of Art is full of some amazing sculptures, paintings, and pictures. I went to the Orlando Museum of Art in search of a piece that was influenced by the classical area or the rise of Christianity but I found so much more. While I was walking around I found that there were so many art pieces that were so intricate and different I loved being in the museum. One piece of artwork stood out to me. There was an art piece named Days and Nights in the Wilderness created by Lavar Munroe. Days and Nights in the Wilderness is a wonderful masterpiece that shows the stereotypes the people place on immigrant from the Bahamas such as exotic, islander, and colorful (Munroe).
When I first looked at this piece it was just a bunch of stuff thrown together and it was very different from the rest of the art work. I was looking at it searching for a deeper meaning or picture and then it hit me. I saw the lady in the yellow dress that was almost doing a spin. Once I noticed the lady I could see the man standing across from her. In the description, it stated that this work of art was showing was it is like to be an immigrant from an island that moved to the United States. I can say that I am guilt for asking questions that would fit into the stereotypes of islanders. When I think of someone living on an island my mind automatically goes to exotic, bright colors, and beaches. This piece shows all those things besides the beach. Now, I can see why Lavar made this to show that this is how immigrant from islands feels when they are questioned and stereotyped.
Lavar felt as if he was being stereotyped by his “non-western culture” (Munroe). Little does Lavar know that he was influenced by the same exact people that the western civilization is influenced by, the Greeks and Romans. In the piece, you see a lady in a yellow dress that looks like she is spinning. She standing with her hips pushed to one side and her feet with one in front of the other creating a “S” shaped curve, which was created by the Greeks. Another way it was influenced is by the dramatic factor. When first looking at this piece so much is happening just like many works of art in the Hellenistic period. This work is dramatic it has a lot going on it is telling a story like many of the art works in the end stretch of the classical era.
Overall,
my experience at the Orlando Museum of art was a pleasant experience. I was
very happy that I could look at a piece of art and see that it was heavily
influenced by Greek and Roman art work. I felt very intelligent being able to
distinguish what was coming from the artist and what was coming from what he
was influenced by. The piece by Lavar Munroe called Days and Nights in the Wilderness was heavily influenced by the
Greek and Rome’s art work and the classical era.
