Course Description
This course focuses on the fundamentals of an evidence-based approach to examining a range of cultural norms, religions, and alternative health care practices of varied racial and ethnic groups, and how these practices affect the definition, design and implementation of culturally competent, individualized health care. Variations in race, ethnic, age and gender groups, family structure and patient support will be explored. Emphasis will be placed on summarizing intercultural aspects and how the multicultural professional nursing workforce can collaborate to assess, plan, and manage care according to the cultural and spiritual needs of individual patients and populations.
Course Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, students should be able to:
- Identify and contextualize the factors that constitute their personal culture, beliefs, and upbringing to understand how those factors influence interactions with patients and the environment. (PLO 2)
- Discuss variations in cultural, and religious backgrounds and practices of patients and families, and their effect on compliance with treatment. (PLO 3, 7, 9)
- Analyze alternative healthcare practices and the effect they have on the provision of patient centered care. (PLO 3, 7, 9)
- Synthesize aspects of knowledge and communication principles pertinent to the intercultural aspects of patient care, and manage care according to the cultural and spiritual needs of individual patients. (PLO 2, 4, 5, 6)
- Evaluation of knowledge of the impact between morals and ethics and how they direct patient and provider choices for treatment across the lifespan. (PLO 2, 8, 9)
Welcome to Week 4
Is it just enough to acknowledge that there is cultural diversity? This week will explore some interventions that will help bridge the knowledge gap.
THere are many cultural based theories and tools to help with understanding and providing culturally competent care, however, it is important to keep in mind the following:
“To provide culturally appropriate and competent care, it is important to remember that each individual is culturally unique and as such is a product of experiences, cultural beliefs, and cultural norms. Cultural expressions become patterned responses and give each individual a quique identity. Although there is as much diversity within cultural and racial groups as there is across and among cultural and racial groups, knowledge of general baseline data relative to the specific cultural group is an excellent starting point to provide culturally appropriate care” (Giger, 2017, p. 7).

Leininger’s Theory of Culture Care Diversity and Universality
ASSIGNMENT
After reviewing the articles and text reading for this week choose one question to answer, (state the question at the start of your post)
1) What interventions are effective in promoting working with a culturally diverse environment, discuss three interventions?
2) From the article ‘Guidelines for Implementing Culturally Competent Nursing Care,’ choose two of the guidelines and discuss why you chose them out of the 10 guidelines and how they fit into your practice in working with patients.
3) Using Leininger’s CCT add one ‘spin off’ theory [chapter 5], and discuss the theories in terms of their impact on integrating culturally congruent care into healthcare.
Include at least one article within the last 5 years to support your discussion, (other than an article used in this course).
