“How do the language habits of a speech community express thought patterns, values, and concerns of that community? In what ways should those language habits be changed and revised, or in what ways should they be enforced and expanded?”
In approximately 2,500 words, using MLA format and integrating ideas from at least three course readings, along with other course vocabulary, describe and evaluate the language habits of a familiar speech community. In your essay, you should persuasively define the term ‘speech community’ by incorporating ideas about social reality and linguistic determinism. You should also evaluate several examples of speech habits or patterns that occur within the focal speech community. Use your essay as a basis to agree with, refute, qualify, or extend the idea of linguistic determinism or relativism, and to advocate for either changes and corrections in language habits or increased awareness and protection of language habits.
