Assignment Brief
As part of the formal assessment for the programme you are required to submit a Crime and Law in Context assignment.
Learning Outcomes: After completing the module, you should be able to:
1. Explain how society has criminalised and decriminalised certain behaviours over the last 70 years.
2. Explain and discuss the historical changes relating to the treatment of offenders.
3. Use a range of credible academic sources to present and explain different definitions of crime
4. Assess the role of the media in influencing public perceptions of crime, the frequency of criminal offences and victimhood.
Assignment Task
The assessment for this module will consist of three tasks. You must complete all three tasks.
Task 1
Using at least 3 academic sources explain the concept of crime and the different definitions. Within your explanation comment on how society has criminalised and decriminalised certain behaviours.
(maximum/notional 500 words)
Task 2 – Essay
Discuss how young people’s relationships, perceptions and choices affect their involvement in knife crime.
Supporting information:
• Discuss initiatives the government have put in place to tackle knife crime.
• Explain the impact that this could have on young people today.
(maximum/notional 1200 words)
Task 3
Part A: Discuss the extent to which the media controls our perception of crime and victims of violent crime. Include theories and current awareness as part of your answer.
Part B: Explain the role of the criminal justice system in relation to the treatment of offenders.
(maximum/notional 650 words x2 = 1300 words)
