Part I: Fundamental Views of Synthesis
Please watch and read over the following materials. (NOTE: there are, of course, some issues/complications/disagreements with the videos and the texts, but that is okay; at this point, I am merely wanting all of us to at least superficially grapple with materials that you may end up consulting on your own anyway. ADDITIONAL NOTE: you will not be responsible for knowing every word or every second in each of these links; rather, try to review them, diligently skim them, peruse them such that you might at least get something useful from them.)

After reviewing these materials, review the 3rd Paper prompt (located in the “Files” link in the left navigation margin). Read over the 3rd Paper prompt such that you feel like you have a sufficient grasp of it–that you might be able to help out a friend/classmate who is still stuck and does not yet know what to do with it. Once you have a solid grasp–to the best of your ability, of course–reflect back on the above materials and…
- choose at least one aspect of one of the videos and discuss why and how it helps to understand the 3rd Paper prompt, and
- choose at least one aspect of one of the web pages and discuss why and how it helps to understand the 3rd Paper prompt.
So for Part I, a) watch and read over the linked materials, b) review the 3rd Paper prompt, and c) discuss why/how the materials (1 from each text group & 1 from video group) relate to the prompt.
Part II: Further Examining Fundamental View of Synthesis/to Synthesize with Respect to the 3rd Paper
Using the index in the MHG, look up Synthesis. Then, go to a wide variety of places that discuss synthesis in the textbook (there are numerous; please, can everyone not just camp out on the first few? let us benefit from some variety!). (HINT: you might want to even bookmark a number of places you think might be helpful for your 3rd Paper.)
After reading over a number of different instantiations of synthesis in the textbook, choose at least one of the instances you read about and elaborate your thoughts as to why and how you feel it is important, helpful, useful, relevant in association to our task before us in the 3rd Paper.
Part III: Reading Reflection
In addition to synthesis, there are a few other concepts that will probably be important to the successful completion of our 3rd Paper, and they are contained in Chapter 10, pp. 277-318 and Chapter 13 (partial), pp. 417-426ish. After reading these selections, discuss in detail at least one concept, idea, or passage/sentence from each Chapter and why/how it relates to our 3rd Paper prompt.
