Assignment 1: Sport-Specific Concept Map (/30)

This assignment is worth 15% of your course grade.
A concept map is a visual organization of how different concepts are connected. In order to understand how to fuel for performance, an understanding of the foods we eat, their individual nutrients and the underlying physiology is required. Different sports require different nutrients from our body. Your assignment is to create a concept map that provides a detailed explanation of how nutrition plays a role in one specific sport.

demonstrate connections between the foods we eat, the nutrients we need and the sports we participate in.
apply acquired nutrient and exercise physiology knowledge to a specific sport.
In this assignment, you will…
create a concept map describing how the foods we eat effectively fuel athletes in a specific sport.
Explain your concept map and reflecting your development process in writing or verbally.
To complete the assignment, take the following steps:
Step 1: Become familiar with concept maps.
Watch the following video: How to Create a Concept Map – YouTube
Step 1: Choose one specific sport from the Arctic Winter Games for the topic of your concept map.
Review the following list of Arctic Winter Games sports  and select one sport to focus on.


Place the name of your sport in the middle of your concept map.
Step 2: Create your concept map using the following rules.
You can create your concept map by:
using a free website (e.g. Miro | Online Whiteboard for Visual Collaboration or MindMeister) OR
drawing by hand on paper (you will need to take a clear picture or scan a copy once completed) OR
using Microsoft Word or other software of your choice
Your mind map must follow these rules:
be no larger than one page
each concept must be connected to at least one other concept using an arrow and connecting words.
include examples whenever possible.
include the all of following words/concepts:
carbohydrates
fats
proteins
phosphagen energy system
anaerobic energy system
aerobic energy system
body composition
body weight
Based on course content, the textbook and your own research, add additional concepts and visualizations to ensure the topic is fully described. Remember your concept map should be a detailed explanation of how nutrition plays a role in your specific sport.
Add arrows, visuals and colours to connect concepts and clearly explain how the various concepts are linked.
Save your concept map as a PDF file and name it:
[FirstName].[LastNameInitial].Assign1.conceptmap
Example: Rebekah.S.A1.conceptmap
Step 3: Explain your concept map in writing or verbally.
Note: You may choose to explain your concept map in writing OR verbally.
Explain your concept map in one paragraph OR 3 minute audio clip, answering the following questions:
How does your concept map describe the role of nutrition in your specific sport?
How did you use colour and other visuals to represent relationships between various concepts?
What was the most important thing you learned during this assignment?
Be sure to include a reference list to the course content, textbook and any additional notes you use in APA formatting.
If you are recording an audio clip, you may use Kaltura, Zoom, or any other platform of your choice.
Save your explanation as a word, PDF or .mp4 file and name it:
[FirstName].[LastNameInitial].Assign1.explanation

Step 4: Upload your files to the Assignment Folder
Upload both your concept map and explanation to the Assignment #1 folder located on the course website.
