For our second essay, write a 1000—1200 word argumentative essay (approx. 4-5 pgs) in which you address following topic/question, citing at least 4 sources in MLA style (see requirements below) to provide evidence and examples supporting your position.

Topic: All the essays we’ve read discuss current environmental issues and problems. Some are optimistic about the ability or potential of humans to work together to solve these issues. Some are pessimistic in the sense that the authors don’t think humans are willing (or capable) to solve these issues without some external guidance, force, or coercion. Krznaric’s and Hardin’s essays, among others, represent two poles of this question. In thinking of this issue, consider what you mean by humans—Individuals? Communities? Corporations? Governments? Each of these involve humans in different ways. In your essay, argue your position on this issue, and provide evidence and expertise to support your position. (Remember the complexity of position arguments that we discussed in class.)

In short: *****Are humans willing/capable of self-motivating to take action on environmental problems facing the world today, or do they need more external motivation (and what is the nature of this external force?) to face these problems? Use the essays we’ve read to provide concrete support and examples for your argument.

  • Evidence/Sources: Use a minimum of 4 sources; at least 3 of these must be essays we read recently in class (Canon, Leopold, Hawkins, Keegan, Krznaric, Hardin, Diamond, Cole and Foster, Walsh, New Evangelical Partnership). You may use your source from Writing Exercise 3 plus any additional research you want/need to do. Include correct in-text citation and a Works Cited page in MLA style.
  • Argument: This type of argument takes a position on an issue and supports your argument. The end of your introduction should include your thesis statement, which should then be re-stated (in different words) in your conclusion. The question is very general, but your argument should be specific and concrete. Avoid vague, undefined pronouns such as “we,” “they” and “you.” Focus on concrete people and problems in specific places. You should predominately be using a logos appeal and avoiding clichés and generalizations (example of such a cliché: “Let’s all work together!” We should do something to help others.”) (Note: This is not a synthesis paper, so you are not directly comparing different authors’ arguments. Instead, you are generating your own argument and using sources for support and examples.)
  • Organization: Each body paragraph should be unified around a central claim and supported with specific reasons and examples, which must be supported with evidence from sources. Your conclusion should answer the “so what” question.
  • Anticipate objections: Address possible objections by offering qualifications or explaining why these objections are not applicable or relevant to your argument.
