Answer the following question in no less than 3 pages. Use the articles I have provided, lectures, and the textbook.
Additionally, I would like you to find two articles on your own that is relevant to the question. You must choose an
academic article or book chapter; no web pages, no articles from popular magazines, and no non-academic books.
Format your citations and works cited using Latin American Antiquity style (the same as you used for your first
paper). The essay will be due on Friday, February 23.
Question
First of all, I would like you to read Conkey and Spector (1984) and Blackmore (2011) which will give you an
introduction into theoretical concepts of gender and identity. Second, choose at least TWO articles from those
provided and TWO articles you find on your own to address the topic of gender and identity in ancient civilizations. In
particular, I would like you to address the question of REPRESENTATION. How are identities represented in artifacts
and in art and iconography? How do rulers/elites use these representations to portray and reinforce particular
ideologies? How do these representations reflect reality? And finally, how do contemporary ideologies regarding
gender and identity influence our interpretations? There are a lot of questions here, and you do not necessarily need
to address ALL of them. Chose one or two (or three!) of the questions that are most interesting to you.
