Abbreviated Business Plan Paper Assignment – 25% (250 points)
Objective: This assignment will give students practice in creating and understanding a
comprehensive business plan.
Instructions:
A. Please create a business plan for a new business or newly purchased existing business. Please
feel free to use your own startup idea, a franchise purchase, or the purchase of another existing
business
B. Follow the Abbreviated Business Plan Outline (p. 156, Exhibit 6.4) to create the plan and
include the following areas (see the scoring rubric in the D2L Assignment area for the specific
requirements):
1) Cover Page and Table of Contents
1) Executive Summary: To be written last. See pp. 157-158 for areas to include.
2) Industry, Target Customer, Competitor Analysis: Industry size, growth rate, trends, segments.
Customer demographics and psychographics. Competitor strengths, weaknesses, products, future
actions. See p. 160.
3) Product/Service Plan: Describe per p. 160.

4) Marketing Plan: Description of the product/service, credit and pricing policies, how the
product/service will be advertised and promoted, selling and distribution approach (see p. 160).
5) Operations and Development Plan: location/facilities/equipment decisions, insourcing vs.
outsourcing. See pp. 160-161.
6) Critical Risks: Describe per p. 161.
7) Offering: Describe how much money is needed and when via a 3 year sources and uses table
(see pp. 161-162).
8) Appendix of Supporting Documents, including references of sources (Internet or otherwise)
used.
D. This document should be a minimum of 10 pages long and a maximum of 12 pages long,
excluding the cover page, a brief table of contents and appendix references, documents and
schedules. Please use double-spacing and Times New Roman 12-point font with 1 inch margins for
your plan document. Please use APA guidelines for cites and references.
