I need (7) seven-page essay on the American Literature course.
There are five separate topics that need to be answered.
Please answer one question per page except the last question (1.6C) which should be answered in 2 to 3 pages.
I’ll include all the literature materials (instructions, short stories, etc.) from the textbook.
1.2B: Comparing Writer’s Purposes
Directions: Complete the comparison essay exercise, “2. Come to America,” on page 36 of your textbook. It should be at least two paragraphs long. Notice that your textbook gives a fairly good outline for what to include in this short essay.
Cover the differences in purpose, audience, and motivation between John Smith and William Bradford. Use concrete examples quoted properly from the text to support your points.
1.3B: Short Narrative
Directions: Complete the creative writing exercise, “3. The Other Side of the Story,” on page 47 of your textbook. It should be at least two paragraphs long. The textbook mentions some research sources you might use to find out facts to use as background or to incorporate into the story. But remember also to use your imagination to put yourself (and your readers) into the time and place.
Think about what particular person you are personifying as you write your essay. For example, Mary Rowlandson was a mother and a Puritan, two facts about her that definitely came through in her writing without her explicit statement of either fact. What facts about your character will appear in your essay?
1.5B: Book of Virtues
Directions: Complete the creative writing exercise, “3. Becoming Virtuous,” on page 98 of your textbook. It should include at least seven virtues. Remember that this is a creative writing exercise, so try to write your virtues in a clear, descriptive way.
If you reread Franklin’s list you’ll see that the illustrations he’s written for each virtue give a good summary of what he’s trying to accomplish. Notice also that his virtues draw something from religious ideas about virtues, but more from rationalist ideas about virtue. Your list doesn’t need to be religious to be effective.
1.6B: Speech
Directions: Complete the exercise, “3. A Call to Action,” on page 105 of your textbook. It should be at least two paragraphs long. Your textbook says that you can recast all or part of Henry’s speech. Please work with at least two paragraphs.
You can choose any issue that you feel needs action and would benefit from some persuasive speaking.
When you are finished writing your speech, practice delivering it out loud either with an audience or to the mirror. Then revise any parts that didn’t work well as an oral expression.
1.6C: Autobiographical Narrative
Directions: Now it is time to complete the autobiographical narrative you’ve been collecting ideas for during the preceding sections. Your final draft will be read and evaluated as part of your grade for this course. It should be at least five paragraphs long.
Look at the “Writer’s Workshop” section on pages 130 – 132 of your textbook for a description of the narrative and steps you should follow to organize your thoughts and produce a polished final draft. There is a short sample section from the conclusion of a student narrative on page 132.
