1) Choose a specific time period or historical epoch (e.g., Ancient Greek and Roman or Europe in the Middle Ages) other than our own and discuss how psychological suffering was approached by those in charge. Also, identify who, specifically, was in charge of making such decisions during that time. Finally, identify a set of behaviors that were considered pathological then but are no longer considered so today. Why do you think we no longer consider those behaviors pathological?
2) Identify at least three ways that ‘human dysfunction’ is conditioned by historical and contextual factors. Approach this from both: a) how definitions of human dysfunction change over time and from place to place, as well as b) how the suffering of individuals might be influenced by different socially and historically relative factors.
