Book Critiques: A Guide

1. The goals of the book critique are to identify the author’s thesis, explain her argument and her sources, and to evaluate her argument.

2. Begin with an introduction that explains the main theme or thesis of the book, or the reason for the author’s writing of the book. You may also refer to issues in the existing literature the author seeks to address. It is not necessary to include a chapter-by-chapter summary, but you may choose to do this.

3. If you quote from the book or refer to a specific passage in it, include a citation as a footnote or endnote.
It is not necessary to use any outside sources in writing the book critiques, but if you do, cite those sources.

4. Do not use long quotations.

5. Use standard grammar, and avoid colloquialisms.

6. Write as if you are addressing an educated non-specialist who has not read the book. Someone who has
an idea of major issues in modern history, sociology, anthropology, or political science should be able to grasp
the merits and the flaws of the book by reading your critique.

7. End with a concluding section that summarizes and restates your observations and evaluation of the
book.

A Writing Checklist

? The paper must have a clear introduction and conclusion.
? The paper must have a major theme or argument.
? The point of the paper must be clear from the introduction.
? All subsequent parts of the paper must support your point.
? The paper must be composed of coherent paragraphs, each with an introductory sentence.
? Each paragraph should make one point to support your argument.
? There should be strong transitions between paragraphs.
? Link sentences with transitional expressions. (Examples: moreover, furthermore, similarly, likewise, yet, in contrast, as a result, therefore, thus, consequently, in sum, in brief, meanwhile)
? Each paragraph must be composed of complete sentences. Do not use incomplete sentences in formal prose.
? The conclusion must summarize the argument and reasoning. It must leave the reader with no doubt
about what you want him or her to believe about the issue you address in your paper.
? All words must be spelled correctly. Use the spell checker on your word-processing program.

? Use consistent and appropriate verb tense. Most commonly, you will use the simple past tense in historical writing. An exception is when you are referring to a living author?s statements. In that case, you will most frequently use the present tense. (When referring to the work of a dead author, some professors prefer that students use the past tense. For example: In The Republic, Plato described the philosopher-king as the ideal ruler.)
? Pronouns must have clear antecedents.
? Pronouns must agree in gender and number with their antecedents.
? Do not use contractions in formal writing.
? Hyphenate compound adjectives. (Depression-era politics)
? Use the semi-colon to separate two closely related complete sentences. Use them also to set off lists within lists of items separated by commas.
