Write an essay discussing the success of the movie version of Jane Eyre, specifically the 1997 A&E version, starring Samantha Morton and Ciaran Hinds, and directed by Robert M. Young. It must be this version, or the 1996 Zeffirelli version, starring William Hurt and Charlotte Gainsbourg.
Discuss particularly in your essay:
1. The focus / seeming intent of the movie; the emphasis it put on love, the changes it made in character development, etc.
2. The changes made in the movie from the book and the effect of these changes
3. If you were a director, what would you have included that was not included? What do you believe is crucial in the book that the director of the film overlooked, disregarded?
For #2, I don’t want you to just list the minor deviations from the actual book, but instead, the major things that made a real difference. For example, don’t just say Mary Rivers was not present in the movie version, because in all honesty, she wouldn’t really add anything to the real crux of the themes or plots. One major thing would for example be something that actually affect the motivation of some characters, etc. I’ll let you be the judge, and bring out and analyze specific examples.
You should have a thesis statement as usual, and write it thoroughly and with proper grammar. It should be well organized, etcetera, and should address those 3 points I mentioned above. Your analysis should really be thorough, though. Go above and beyond, in other words, all the while staying within topic, of course.
