Individual Project
Part 1
Healthcare social workers are critical human resource personnel in the healthcare sector who specialize in offering psychological support to the patients. The psychological help is offered to patients with chronic diseases and acute or terminal illness. Healthcare social workers have various duties including advising the family and patients, the provision of education and information regarding the illness to the patients, and assisting the patients in critic situations (Hupperz et al., 2014). Similarly, they conduct daily tasks such as collaborating with other healthcare practitioners in the assessment of patients’ needs as well as planning the treatment procedures. Additionally, the workers help in the referrals of patients to other social service programs while assisting the healthcare system in the investigation of legal issues.
Healthcare social workers possess skills such as active listening, social sharpness, fluent dialect, critical thinking, coordination, reading skills, and are required to have great decision-making skills. Furthermore, they should possess qualities such as oral comprehension (listening and understanding), expression qualities, reading and understanding, problem sensitivity, and inductive reasoning (Hupperz et al., 2014). Healthcare social workers are required to have one or various certifications such as Qualified Clinical Social Worker Credential or Certified Social Worker in Health Care (Careeronestop 2017). The social worker should as well have degree or masters in healthcare social work and have skills in computing to help in the development of modern education and healthcare system. However, any graduate can start working without experience and could start with an annual minimum salary of $32,750 (Careeronestop 2017).
Another occupation in the healthcare system is Critical Care Nurses. The occupation entails the provision of nursing care to patients with coronary diseases, which requires the skills mentioned above. Furthermore, the occupation is helpful because of the monitoring of patients’ conditions and development as well as the treatment of emergencies (Porter & Lee, 2013). However, the annual salary of a Clinical Care Nurse is higher than that of a Healthcare Social Worker, which amounts to $47120 and does not require experience to start the job (Careeronestop 2017).
Part 2
The website has various job advertisements, but I chose three which are Social Workers in Erie County, Medical Social Worker in New Mexico, and a Social Worker in Indiana. Therefore, I would apply for the jobs because I possess skills that can help in executing the job titles. For instance, the skills include active learning which is the capability in coming up with new ideas. Writing skills would help in creating awareness through sharing of written documents within a health organization (Moore et al., 2013). Similarly, I have the skills in coordinating others, speaking with the other staffs, and having a well-groomed service orientation, which is a way of helping patients and other people. However, I would like to add more skills in my occupation such as empathy, boundary setting, self-awareness, and persuasion skills. I could improve and access the skills through reading medical education books as well as associating with qualified and experienced personnel with the aim of improving the healthcare service delivery.
I have a one year experience as a healthcare social worker which I obtained from a community development program in a health facility. However, I would like to add more experience by working on free programs and other community development programs that would help shape my career. Similarly, my degree program in the medical school would help in progressing my career as well as obtaining the required knowledge and skills to advance my education.
Part 3
The New York Presbyterian Hospital is a healthcare organization aimed at dealing with the effectiveness and delivery of medical services. The organization is the largest in New York City and offers diverse sets of services such as ambulatory, inpatient/outpatients services, preventive care, and medicine (NewYork-Presbyterian, 2017). Therefore, the organization focuses on promoting the clinical pharmacology. Furthermore, the organization’s mission statement includes the promoting of health services through the optimization of therapeutics. The organization as well is aimed at providing innovative leadership and education enabling the current and upcoming generation throughout the process of providing equitable and affordable healthcare services. The organization also aims at optimizing the research development and utilizes the medication for the benefit of the patients and medical practitioners.
The New York Presbyterian has been having a turnout of patients amounting to over 2 million visits whereby the largest population is comprised of infants amounting to 15000 as well as other 310000 cases of emergency departments (NewYork-Presbyterian, 2017). The high number of doctors and nurses helps in providing medical services to the huge amount of patients annually. The hospital has 6500 physicians being helped by other 20000 employees (NewYork-Presbyterian, 2017). Furthermore, the healthcare organization is interesting because of their strategy in managing all their employees and a large number of patients. Additionally, the organization manages to be at the top being the leading and the best hospital in New York. I could help the organization to improve if offered the chance. I would incorporate the skills of Healthcare Social Worker such as self-assessment, empathy, and persuasion which would help the patients have maximum satisfaction.
