Feminist of Game Thrones vs. Male Dominated the Lord of the Rings
- INTRODUCTION
- Women are often portrayed in films as weak individuals who have to rely on men for survival. As such, women are considered as persons who cannot survive on their own but require men who in most cases fill the leadership positions (Tolkien).
- However, this is just but a perception of most communities, which is presented differently in the series Game of Thrones. Women are depicted as independent people who are strong enough even to rule men. Women who fill leadership position and influence a change in the society are depicted as powerful and independent. Such women include Daenerys Targaryen and Arya Stark who are used to portray feminism throughout the film (Frankel). On the contrary, The Game of Thrones carries the same old perception from many communities that men remain stronger than women. As such, men oppress women and fight for the leadership positions in this film.
- Thesis: The Game of Thrones and Lord of the Rings depict constant oppression by the administration controlled by men. However, the Game of Thrones depicts the rise of women power in the society, where some women portray power and command respect. Contrarily, Lord of the Rings depicts a male-biased society where males receive preferential treatment. This research, therefore, will address the aspect of gender biasedness within the society as depicted in The Game of Thrones and Lord of the Rings.
- WOMEN FIGHT AGAINST STANDARDS OF SOCIETY
- Most of the societies are led by men who actualize political revolutions.
- However, one of the characters in Game of Thrones, Arya Stark, fights for the rights of the people in the society (Frankel 47). Not only does she portray good leadership traits but also successfully conquers one the fights she partakes.
III. WOMEN CAN SURVIVE INDEPENDENTLY IN TOUGH CONDITIONS
- Unlike the stereotypes of most communities that women cannot survive in some tough conditions, women are seen to adapt and successfully live in tough environments.
- Arya Stark tackles all the situations she encounters in a composed way and survives without the help of men as expected by most societies (Frankel 47).
- WOMEN CAN EFFECTIVELY LEAD THE SOCIETY
- Daenerys Targaryen, another character in the Game of Thrones, is portrayed as a powerful woman with many feminine traits takes a leadership position in a male-dominated society (Frankel 71).
- STEREOTYPE GENDER ROLES:
- In the Lord of the Rings, women are considered inferior and are not involved directly in any major societal revolution.
- The Lord of Rings portrays the old perspective of gender that men are superior to women and should be given all the leadership positions in the society since women are inferior (Tolkien).
- Similarly, the series shows that women cannot survive in the tough conditions that the men are exposed to in the series.
VI CONCLUSION
- The Game of Thrones and Lord of the Rings present two different accounts of feminism in the society. As evidenced in the Game of Thrones, women are capable of engaging in activities that men are believed to be the only best people in carrying out the activities.
- Therefore, through the allocation of equal opportunities in the society and giving women chances, the society can be a better place to live in since both women and men will be striving for a common goal which includes a better society.
