You may use either the NYU Urban Farm Lab as your space, in which you will redesign the space and create a specific crop plan related to your specific urban farm’s purpose or use another researched space within New York City. After picking your space, you will then visit it at least twice to study specific details of the site, which are listed below.
Guidelines:
• Discuss the basics: How will you water the farm (buckets from a sink or not recommended)? How much full sunlight does the space receive? How will you design your space accordingly? How will you keep your crops and soil healthy? Where will you get soil for the site (if not using the farm lab)? Will you compost?
• What crops will be grown on the site for three different seasons (spring, summer, fall)? What will be your specific crop plan (make a chart of planting times and quantities of each crop)? How does growing each crop relate to the purpose of your farm?
For your blueprint you will show any perennials grown and the fruits and
vegetables for only one season.
• What agricultural techniques will be used to grow the crops?
• Who will be involved with the project? Who will manage the project? Who
will care for the crops every day?
• Discuss the overall goals of the project and how it will fit into the larger
urban food system.
• How has your plan evolved since you began?
