Summary
1. Select a biology related article dated no earlier than the first day of the current semester(August 25th)
2. The paper must contain a title page AND at least 3 full pages of text. The title page and references page do not count toward the minimum pages of text.
3. Attach the original article or a photocopy of it to the paper.
Biology related articles are frequently seen in magazines and newspapers. They may be about genetic engineering, cancer, habitat destruction and loss of biodiversity, the ecological cost and economic consequences of pollution, AIDS and other human health issues, population growth rates, evolution or a seemingly endless variety of other subjects. In the paper you write you must focus on a topic in one article and demonstrate that you can understand and evaluate the biological issues presented in the article you selected. You must also explain how the articles material is relevant to your life or to humankind in general.
Your paper mus tbe based on information from a current article in popular press publications such as magazines and newspapers. Do not use articles from scientific journals or ones less than 5 paragraphs long. Do not use articles from websites UNLESS they are from publications that issued in both web and printed versions, as is the case with some newspapers and magazines. The article you select must have a publication date later than the first day of the current semester (August 25). It must clearly be a biology related topic and more than just a few paragraphs long. Your paper must clearly summarize the biological issues in the in the article and how they relate to you or other organisms and that you understand the underlying science. You should also relate this information to Biology issues that may be found in the text. You must discuss all the important ecological, economic, medical or ethical issues and implications of the topic to humans and other living things. In addition to the article , you must use 3 addition references that provide supporting material or additional information. These must be cited in your paper and included in your list of references. Although websites can not be used as a source of articles for your paper , they may provide supporting material and ideas. If information and ideas from websites are used they must be properly credited in the paper, and the website address must be cited in the references section.
