One of earliest written accounts of law can be found in the Law Code of Hammurabi. Here is an excellent verbatim account of the law: http://www.wsu.edu/~dee/MESO/CODE.HTM. I especially enjoy the prologue ? which of course was hammered into large stones (stele: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/cb/Code_of_Hammurabi_replica_stele_REM.JPG) which were then placed throughout Hammurabi‘s empire so all would know the laws of the land. Inscribed on each stele were two hundred and eighty two laws (that is a lot of chisel work)! These laws cover all aspects of the law: political, social, and economic.
Class, please pick one (or two, or three, or four…) laws from the stele that you found particularly interesting. What can this law (or laws) tell us specifically about Hammurabi‘s empire and about Mesopotamia, in general?
