Purpose
The main purpose of this assignment is the same as that of your journals. In this narrative, you’re engaging in metacognition, reflective thinking, just about the course as a whole rather than about each week as a discrete unit as you did in your Weekly Reflective Journals. This narrative models the value of scaffolding assignments–sequencing assignments in such a way that skills build on each other.
This assignment satisfies the last student learning outcome listed on your syllabus (students will exhibit self-reflection and independent thought).
Tasks
Using the Weekly Reflective Journals as inspiration and source material, you will write a 1300 word minimum Reflective Narrative about your learning experience in this course.
Tips for Success
Your narrative is reflective and will deal with some of the same questions as your individual journal entries, just considering the course as a whole. For example:
What did you know about teaching first year comp before taking this course? How did course content confirm or challenge your prior knowledge?
What surprised you about what you learned in this course? What confused you? What do you still want/need to know more about?
How do you see yourself using course content in a future course you will teach?
What information have your classmates shared throughout the course that enriched your understanding of course content? If you have disagreed with a classmate’s approach to course content, why did you disagree, and how did that disagreement help clarify your understanding of yourself as an educator?
How has course content helped you understand what is important to you as an educator?
This is not an exhaustive list of the kinds of topics you might address in your narrative.
Criteria
1. Your narrative must be 1200 words minimum to receive full credit. You may write more than 1200 words.
2. Your narrative must be reflective and deal thoughtfully with the course content for the semester to receive full credit.
3. Your journal must use correct spelling, punctuation, and grammar (SPAG) to receive full credit.
4. Please use the MLA formatting template to structure your narrative correctly. You can find the template in the Handouts folder. Just download the document, open it, and begin typing your narrative. You will need to change elements of the template (your name before the page number, your name on page, the date, and the class, the WC page).
5. If you cite sources in your narrative, you will need to create a WC page. Please use the WC page of the template to help you format that correctly. If you do not cite sources, be sure to delete that page of the template.
