Purpose

The purpose of this discussion is to explore the responsibilities of a project manager.

Instructions

Reflect upon your readings and personal or professional experience and address the following:

  1. Detail your implementation plan for your DNP project. Include milestones for a timeframe of 8-12 weeks.
  2. Explicate how you will gauge the success of your project.
  3. What is your role in managing your project budget and resources in the planning and implementation phases?

Project topic- Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction as an Alternative Treatment for Mild to Moderate Depression

To improve the daily  personal and professional functioning of patients with psychiatric mental illness such as major depressive disorder or anxiety disorder.

Translation Science Model: Knowledge-to-Action Model

PICOT- In adult patients with mild to moderate depression at an outpatient mental health clinic, does implementation of MBSR compared to standard care improve depression symptoms in 8-10 weeks?

From Practice Readiness form

Week 1:

• Eligible patients informed about the study project, sign informed consent

• Baseline depression assessment performed using PHQ-9

• Participants instructed on project expectations

Weeks 2-9:

• Participants allocated to 2-4 groups for weekly in person lessons on mindfulness meditation, and mindful movement based on the Palouse mindfulness based stress reduction program (Hoge et al., 2022). Participants instructed on downloading and using MyPossibleSelf app for daily guidance and logging of MBSR activities. The project leader will collect weekly logs of MBSR activities and schedule VSEE FaceTime or Zoom meetings to review progress and answer questions.

Week 10:

• Post-test depression assessment performed using the PHQ-9

• Data analyzed for pre-and post-test comparisons.

Resources from class

Project initiation comes from a caregiver, senior administrator, or regulatory agency directive. Then, a project manager is identified and appointed by a senior sponsor or stakeholder. The Project Manager creates a team and they work until the project is complete. Stakeholders are involved from beginning, during the project, and in perpetuity in the last phase sustaining the practice change.

Stakeholders

  • Physicians use surgical suites and supplies.
  • The operating room nurse needs supplies that are readily available.
  • The supply chain employees need to know which supplies are discontinued and which are new to be ordered.
  • Technology services has an interest as they are charged with ensuring the computer wiring is sufficient and that upgrades to software and equipment in the operating rooms can be addressed relatively easily. Examples of computer upgrades are the new fields for documentation and deleting the old defunct documentation.
  • Facility services departments could be concerned with the placement of certain fixtures and equipment as this impacts the ability to maintain and clean the suites and efficient workflows.
  • Risk management colleagues are interested in protecting patients and employees from injury and providing high-quality care.
  • Facility engineers are tasked with ensuring the safety of the operating systems and new equipment with the new evidence-based practice change protocols.
  • The marketing department stakeholders will be involved in the project to create new information.
  • Community stakeholders are beneficial in supporting all phases of the evidence-based practice change project, including sustaining the practice change.

When undertaking a project, it is therefore important to identify stakeholders in the early stages of the design phase to involve all stakeholders in a comprehensive discussion about the various needs and desires of all potential customers to formulate a broad-based consensus regarding the anticipated project.

  • In modern healthcare, interdisciplinary teams of stakeholders have the advantage of providing different perspectives on a situation, including solutions that might otherwise have been overlooked. Thus, potential problems can be addressed at the earliest possible phase and often at the lowest possible cost, as team members may be aware of a solution that is already available and need only be implemented to resolve a situation.
  • Another benefit of gathering stakeholders early relates to the efficiency of the team and adds credibility and aids acceptance of the outcomes. The earlier the involvement of a broad base of stakeholders in a project, the more likely there will be grassroots support and ultimate acceptance of the change.

Gantt Chart

A Gantt chart depicts necessary activities or goals in a matrix format with the horizontal axis indicating the time frame and the vertical axis the activities in the project. Milestones mark important points along your project timeline. They are crucial checkpoints that let you know if your project is on the right track and not off-course!

Critical Path Method

The critical path method is a model of the sequencing of events that must be completed for the successful implementation of a project.

  1. Identify all the activities that must be completed.
  2. Identify how long it will take to complete the activities.
  3. Create a diagrammed workflow including days needed to complete the activity.

Program Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT)

PERT is a more sophisticated version of the critical path method.

  • All activities are noted in a network format with events and activities identified.
  • Development begins at the end and works backwards to identify those activities that must be completed.
  • Number and triangles indicate the earliest week that an activity can start.
  • Squares indicate the latest week the activity can start with the project still completing on time.
  • Circles indicate the likely time frames.

Effective communication is crucial to building support for a project and must begin with the initial conversations regarding the need to address a situation (Harris et al., 2020).

Sponsorship and leadership are critical during the initial stages of every project because this is where the initial parameters of the project are determined. Goals must be specific enough so that everyone is working toward a common objective, but the goals should also have sufficient flexibility to allow for both creativity and unexpected contingencies during the life of the project. The ultimate outcome should add value to the organization and justify the use of resources needed.
