Analyze, compare, and discuss the improvisatory styles and musical philosophies of Louis Armstrong and Bix Beiderbecke. BRIEFLY discuss the musical background and influences of each, as well as the political and/or social conditions that played a part in shaping their musical lives, and therefore the creation of the early jazz genre. Focus on the “hot style” approach of Armstrong in contrast to the “cool, reflective” side of Beiderbecke. Investigate the reasons for Armstrong’s world-wide popularity as opposed to Beiderbecke’s relative obscurity. Stay in the scope of the era (the beginning and creation of the jazz idiom). 500 words, Times New Roman size 12 font, double spaced, MLA format (approximately two pages).
Stay in the early jazz era. We are NOT discussing “Cool Jazz” here. That’s 30 years later.
“What a Wonderful World” is irrelevant to this discussion. Do not cite it. It was recorded decades later. In general, when discussing early jazz be cautious of citing a recording with a drum-set, as they weren’t really in regular use until the big band era. In this early jazz era, you mostly hear marching band style percussion, or a wood-block.
Cite any books, articles, or recordings to support your main points (absolutely required in academic papers), and acknowledge your sources – this may be done informally (mentioning the author, work, and date of publication) or formally (using citations).
