Learning Outcomes:
This slideshow presentation allows you to begin addressing the following three course learning outcomes, by asking you to discuss the effects of an illness on seven U.S. communities:
- Explain the concepts of health, illness, and health care from a sociological perspective.
- Critique the social inequalities and stratification prevalent in U.S. health care settings.
- Analyze current health care crises, including their impact on communities in the U.S. and their incidence abroad.
Instructions:
You will create a presentation of 15-20 Google Slides.
The presentation should include at least one original graphic or visual representation that clearly enhances data or concepts explained in the presentation (for example, a graph, a chart, a diagram, or a mind map), but no more than three graphic or visual representations total.
The following is a suggested list of programs you can use for your graphic representation (but feel free to use another program not on this list):
- Google Slides (best for creating a graph or pie chart illustrating quantitative information)
- Word (best for the same as Google Slides)
- LucidChart (best for mind mapping the multiple effects of an illness on multiple communities)
- Piktochart (best for creating an infographic display of facts or data)
- Canva (best for the same as Piktochart)
Preparation/Pre-Writing
You completed your preparation and pre-writing for this essay by completing the Weeks 1-4 assignments in Google Slides.
Your instructor should be grading and providing feedback on the following, based on your Weeks 1-4 assignments:
- the illness you will present.
- your drafts of slides 5-10 or 12 in Google Slides on the illness’s effects on the seven communities discussed in Chapter 3, as well as the reasons for these effects.
- your presentation’s conclusion with takeaways on the overall social impact and significance of the illness.
- your graphic representation(s) or illustration(s).
Slide 1: Title Slide
Begin your presentation with a title slide in APA format.
Here is a link to a Power Point template in APA format: https://www.slideshare.net/wtidwell/apa-template-powerpoint
Be sure your presentation title includes the name of the illness you are presenting; and be sure it includes your name.
Slides 2-4: Definition of Illness
Briefly describe the disease that is the basis of the illness you are presenting.
Then, explain what makes the disease an illness.
Lastly, briefly explain why you chose to analyze this specific illness’s impact on communities in the U.S.
Be sure to employ the sociological perspective, use your own words, and cite at least one source in APA style. (The source can be from the course).
Slides 5-10 or 12: Effects on Specific U.S. Communities and the Environment
There should be one to three slides on each community listed below. These slides should discuss the effects of the illness on the community, and also the social inequalities that explain why these specific effects occur. All seven communities must be discussed!
- poor and low-income Americans
- African Americans
- Hispanic Americans
- Native Americans
- Asian Americans
- elderly Americans
- the environment
Use your own words, and cite, in APA style, at least five sources total for this section. At least one of the five sources should be from outside the course.
Slides 11-13 or 13-15: Conclusion
End the presentation with two or three slides summarizing the overall social impact or significance of the illness, based on the illness’s effects due to the social inequalities experienced by specific communities.
What should viewers take away from this presentation?
Hint: this is a great section in which to include a graphic illustration of the illness’s overall effects on the seven communities.
Slides 14-15 or 16-17: References
List all sources cited in the presentation, in APA style.
Be sure to carefully follow all instructions, fully complete all sections, and thoroughly answer any questions listed in the instructions above. Don’t forget a title slide, a list of “References,” at least one graphic representation of a concept or data, and APA style! Incomplete papers will be marked down according to the grading rubric for this assignment.
Please refer to the “SOCU 416 ONLINE MID-TERM PRESENTATION” rubric to see how this paper will be graded.
Submit this presentation in two places:
