The cases of “Chick Gin” and “Typhoid Mary” are examples of the ways in which changes in the understanding of how disease is spread affected public reaction and “first response” epidemic control measures over time. Given the level of epidemiologic knowledge at the times that these epidemics occurred, which, if any, of the public health actions taken do you think were too inhumane? Why? Which, if any, of the actions taken were necessary to protect the public’s health, even if they seemed harsh for the individuals affected?
