| Assignment 2 – mark Literature review Comments on the stance and engagement strategies you used in your literature review Peer review of a classmate’s draft literature review Summaries and comments on any TWO readings from Units 5-9 | ||
| Part A: A literature review (700-800 words; 30 marks) | ||
| Choose a topic of interest in academic writing e.g., disciplinary differences; authorial voice and identity; stance & engagement; source-based writing; written corrective feedback; collaborative writing; assessing writing; publishing research in English; thesis and dissertation writing; writing an academic argument; teaching academic writing in global contexts; cohesion and coherence in academic writing. Give your review a title. Introduce your review by stating its aim or focus. Present an argument for the importance of this topic and the need for further research by reviewing 2-3 themes related to your topic, citing 3-4 texts for each (a total of 10-15 citations from 8-10 good quality sources*). Most citations should be non-integral. There should be some evidence of your stance/position as the author of your review, of engagement with the reader, and of evaluation of the literature that you cite. DO NOT USE any direct quotations or secondary citations. You should be citing from the Results and Discussion sections of any articles you cite (not from the Abstract, Introduction or review of previous literature). Examples: A number of scholars (Cortazzi & Jin, 1996; Hu, 2005) have queried the appropriateness of CLT in Confucian-heritage contexts. This counts as 1x citation from 2x sources. The fundamental approach to education in Korea would need to change before CLT could be successfully introduced (Li, 2008). This counts as 1x citation from 1x source. Please don’t use headings or lists (numbered or bullet points): use metadiscourse to communicate a clear line of thought in paragraphs of 120-200 words. * It’s important to cite good quality sources from books and journals. For this assignment, use only Journal of Second Language Writing; Journal of English for Academic Purposes; System; Written Communication; Writing & Pedagogy. (See me if you want to use any other journal). Do not use any internet sources or unpublished theses. Finish your review with a concluding sentence that summarises the key points of your review and points out how it has identified issues/gaps and ideas for future research. See the LANGTCHG 715 text for information about literature reviews and samples (p. 125-153). You must include accurate in-text and end-of-text references for all citations (APA format). For this assignment, in-text citations must include the page numbers of each source. KEEP COPIES OF THE PAGES YOU HAVE CITED (unless you are citing the overall theme of an article or book), and highlight or underline the parts of the page that you have used for your citations. You will need to submit these with your assignment. Please provide a word count and keep to the word limits | ||
