For this assignment, you will examine a work of art, as well as a poem. Both touch on the topic: The Fall of Icarus. You will then create a Venn diagram, followed by a descriptive essay. Resources for this assignment can be found in the sidebar. See the steps for the assignment below:
Step One: Examine the painting by Pieter Bruegel’s and note descriptive features about the painting.
Step Two: Read “Musée des Beaux Arts” by W.H. Auden (attachment in assignment link)
Step Three: Create a Venn diagram that notes the similarities and differences in the way these two artistic mediums treat the subject. (Ex. how the painting and poem handle the fall of Icarus). You may choose to handwrite it or complete it online via another program. This is part of the brainstorming process for the next step (attachment in assignment link)
Step Four: Write a descriptive essay that discusses Bruegel’s painting. Describe the painting as if you are in it or looking at it with depth. Remember to use specific words. Feel free to move beyond just what “you” see and describe what the people/animals in the painting might be seeing, hearing, smelling, etc.
This should be a minimum of four paragraphs (containing an introduction, body, and conclusion). The paragraphs should be 8-10 sentences in length. The essay should conform to MLA formatting guidelines.
Remember, the general characteristics of descriptive writing include:
• rich, vivid, and lively detail
• use of sensory imagery
• figurative language such as simile, hyperbole, metaphor, symbolism and personification
• showing, rather than telling, through the use of active verbs and precise modifiers.
