ASSESSMENT TITLE

You are required to produce an applied literature report on a sport management topic or issue of your choice.

ASSESSMENT BRIEF

You are required to design and conduct a literature report to address a real-life SPORT MANAGEMENT problem.

To do this you need to:

  • Identify a research problem by drawing on insight from contemporary sources such as trade magazines, blogs, conversations with industry practitioners, and/or recommended future research from academic journal articles (THIS PROBLEM MUST BE AN ISSUE OF CONCERN WITHIN SPORT MANAGEMENT).
  • Develop the problem into a clearly stated research question
  • Search for and read relevant literature
  • Compile an analytical review of relevant literature (describe, synthesise and question previous research findings)
  • Ensure that the work is arranged in a logical and progressive manner
  • Identify recommendations for sport management practice/change based on your review findings
  • Provide a conclusion summarising the answer to the research question
  • Keep summary notes of tutorials and append them to your report.

For further guidance on report writing and literature reviewing please, refer to Skills plus on the University library page, via the following links:

Literature Reviewing:

Report writing:

Please note that textbook and library guidance on literature reviewing will often be based on using a literature review as a context to identifying a research question and a subsequent empirical study. In this assessment, you are instead, using the review as the actual research tool. Therefore, you must identify your research question first and use the review to help answer it. Further guidance on this will be provided in taught sessions.

MARKING CRITERIA

A successful assessment will demonstrate:

Research Problem (10%)   In this section you should identify the ‘problem’, issue, and aims of the report.
Extended literature review (65%)   This section should include a logical and progressive, analytical review of relevant literature to address the research aims.
Applied implications (15%)   Throughout the report you should discuss applied implications of research findings where appropriate. In addition to this, you should include a section on Recommendations for Practice. This sub-section could be used to demonstrate how academic research can be used as an objective tool that can aid managers as they seek to implement best practice solutions.
Conclusion (5%)   The conclusion should include a summary of the main findings and indicate how the report has achieved its aims.
Appendix (meeting notes) (5%)   You should compile a record of your research meetings and append them to your report. This will contain a summary of each meeting, including actions to be completed. You will find a template for recording meeting notes on the module blackboard site.

N.B.

In all cases please refer to the Level 5 Generic Grade Descriptors in the Student Handbook for further guidance on the expectations required of your work at Level 5.
