Garden Research Presentation
Select a seed to plant from the choices in class. Plant your seeds in the garden beds at Moraine Valley.
PowerPoint Presentation
- Research chosen food (seed), i.e.
Description – where is your food originally from? Where can you find it now? What does it look like? What does it taste like? Etc.
Cultivation – in what climate does your food grow best? In what soil does your food grow best? How long from seed to harvest? Etc.
Culinary Use – which parts of the world typically use your food? How is it used – main ingredient, garnish, flavor enhancer, to add texture, etc.?
Health Benefits and Precautions – does your food have any known health benefits? Are there any warnings regarding excessive consumption?
Anything else you find interesting!
- Go to the USDA National Nutrient Database, http://ndb.nal.usda.gov/. Type in your food. Choose a serving size that you think someone would actually eat. For example, 1 Tbsp of Parsley is more closely associated to the amount of parsley one would eat as opposed to 1 Cup or 100g of parsley.
What is the macronutrient content as well as energy, fiber and sugar?
What are the three most abundant micronutrients? What does each of these micronutrients do for our bodies? How do each of these micronutrients benefit our bodies? What does a deficiency in your chosen three micronutrients cause?
- Find or develop a nutrient dense recipe highlighting your food; your food should be the star of this recipe. Make the recipe, try it. Do you like it? Why or why not. Put your recipe on your slide along with a picture of the dish you created.
- Reference using either APA or AMA format. Be certain to use credible sources, i.e., peer reviewed journals, .edu, .gov, .org, etc. Wikipedia and WebMD are not acceptable resources to use for this project.
- Presentations should contain around 10 slides (give or take) and be at least 5 minutes but not to exceed 10 minutes.
