This week we explore ‘sexually’ inspired violence. For our discussion, I would like for you to:
1. Identify what are the causal factors in ‘sexually’ inspired violence.
2. Identify forms and types of ‘sexually’ inspired violence.
3. Discuss how a Christian should respond to sexual violence. What Scriptural texts can you find to support your thinking?
Week 7 Mini-Lecture
Hi Class,
This week we explore what is now referred to as intimate partner violence (IPV). The reason for the change is due to same-sex partner violence that is more prevalent than is commonly known and the universalization of sexually-oriented violent actions/activities. There are a variety of reasons for ‘sexually’ motived violence. Often when violence is present in a relationship it is an expression of power, domination, and a need by one or both people to control the other. Yet, IPV is one of the most easily preventable social-relational problems. For your discussion, you might consider exploring:

A Christian response to IPV is not to simply accept, allow, permit, rationalize away the action/activities but to take action to prevent, report, and ‘fix’ the problem. The Scriptures commonly used to justify or maintain IPV in a relationship is:
Col. 3:18 (NIV) Wives, submit yourselves to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.
Eph. 5:24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.
1Pet. 3:1 Wives, in the same way submit yourselves to your own husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives,
Fortunately, there are a variety of other Scriptures that indicate something very different like:
Eph. 5:21 Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.
Eph. 5:25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her
Eph. 5:28 In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.
Eph. 5:33 However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.
Col. 3:19 Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them.
Thus, if someone tries to rationalize IPV based upon Scripture, that person is simply wrong.
