Statistics
First, you will have to decide what descriptive data analyses are required and employ SPSS statistical package to explore and analyze the data. After accomplishing your analyses, save your output (you will need to submit your output with your written results). Take your output and interpret the results and draw some inferences from the data. This interpretation with your inferences must be presented in the form of a “Results” section. Inclusion of specific descriptive data tables will be expected. Three to seven pages, double-spaced should be adequate to capture this information. You are reminded that I will grade only your work and that this is an independent assignment.
The data set you will use for this examination is the self.sav file that is located on Blackboard. Also if you request, I will email this file to you. You will not be able to read this file on computers without SPSS installed. In fact, the file will not look as you normally see a SPSS file. However, if you do not have SPSS installed you may still move this file to a disk to take to a computer that has SPSS installed. The self.sav file includes the following variables:
Variable Name | Variable Description |
age | Age of Participant |
gender | Gender of Participant (1 = female; 2 = male) |
citizen | Country of Citizenship of Participant (1 = Japan; 2 = USA) |
collect | Collectivism Scale Score |
ioam | Individually-Oriented Achievement Motivation |
soam | Socially-Oriented Achievement Motivation |
indse | Individualistic Self-Esteem |
cses | Collectivistic Self-Esteem |
indsc | Independent Self-Construal |
intsc | Interdependent Self-Construal |
SITUATION
A researcher is concerned about several recent studies regarding cultural relationships to collectivism. The researcher did a literature review and discovered that they were several things that appear to influence collectivism but collectivism appeared to be different across gender regardless of the country of origin. Based on this literature review, the researcher deductively established a problem statement of “Overall collectivism is different across genders regardless country of origin.” The researcher develops a hypothesis of “Females have higher overall collectivism scores as compared to males at an alpha level of .05.” After reviewing the data, the researcher feels that all variable data must be on a similar scale and uses z-scores to standardize the scales.
- Create standard scores for each of the variables of the Collectivism Scale Score, Individually-Oriented Achievement Motivation, Socially-Oriented Achievement Motivation, Individualistic Self-Esteem, Collectivistic Self-Esteem, Independent Self-Construal, and Interdependent Self-Construal. (10 points)
- The next procedure will be completed using first the raw scores and then the standardized scores. Conduct the appropriate analyses to answer the hypothesis. Your output must accompany your response. (20 points).
- Interpret your standardized scores output in a “Results” section as described above (see rubric; 70 points).

Results Section
Excerpt from the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, Fifth Edition (p. 20, 2001): The Results section summarizes the data collected and the statistical or data analytic treatment used. Report the data in sufficient detail to justify the conclusions. Mention all relevant results, including those that run counter to the hypothesis. Do not include individual scores or raw data, with the exception, for example, of single-case designs or illustrative samples. Discussing the implications of the results is not appropriate here. [But inferences can be made along with significance.]
