Assessment task details and instructions Summative assessment/Coursework assessment Integrated Portfolio (100%) – 2 submissions (word limit 3000 words total) The Portfolio should be submitted via Turnitin on Blackboard, under Assessment, and will consist of: Laboratory Report (Communication) – written in the Communication style journal article (70%) using the template provided (individual submission)- 2500 words references excluded Informational leaflet with graphical abstract (30%) will be based on the topics discussed within the module and will comprise of 500 words lay summary and a graphical abstract. This group submission will be assessed using the rubric for grading and marked out of 100. (group submission) Templates for drafting the Integrated Portfolio are available on the module BlackBoard site, under Module information. Integrated Portfolios will be assessed using the rubric for grading that is available on module BlackBoard site, in the Appendix of the Module Handbook and attached to this document, and marked out of 100. The assessment will be based on the following: You are required to generate a lab report based on the laboratory practical attended in the Communication style/ scientific journal article (further information under Module Information/Blackboard). The requirements and skills on the scientific journal article writing will be outlined in the module workshop. Date of submission of the Perspective Article is by Writing style: academic/scientific writing – perspective style (authentic template provided in the Module Information area of the Blackboard site) Referencing style: Harvard 7th APA (full details on the referencing style including the academic/scientific writing tips can be found on module’s blackboard site under ‘Templates’)Intended audience: academic; scientific (writing style intended for publishing in a scientific journal) Anonymous marking applies for this assessment. | |
Assessed intended learning outcomes On successful completion of this assessment, you will be able to: Knowledge and Understanding Critically discuss the nanotechnology-related topics applied in nanomedicine and consider how synthesis by design can contribute to solving the current medical issues, including critical evaluation and significance of bio-nano interactions and interfaces.Demonstrate integrated knowledge and understanding of nanomaterials used in nanomedicine and their basic preparation and characterisation methods.Show extensive familiarity with a range of design of fabrication strategies and approaches for analysis of nanoparticles aimed for biomedical applications, i.e. sensing and detection of diseases, drug delivery and nano-therapeutics in relation to traditional approaches. Practical, Professional or Subject Specific Skills 1. Gain hands-on experience in nanofabrication and nanoparticle characterisation. Please note that you will get a catch up skills session on practical skills after the lockdown. 2. Apply numerical and intellectual skills for the critical analysis & interpretation of experimental data as well as decision-making in complex tasks. 3. Further develop problem-solving and inclusive group working abilities in a cross-cultural and cross-disciplinary context. Transferable Skills and other Attributes 1. Show interpersonal skills developed through team working in the laboratory and during workshops/case studies, including exercising initiative and personal responsibility. 2. Module Aims To provide you the opportunity to engage critically with literature and develop your knowledge and understanding on man-made and naturally occurring nanomaterials for uses in nanomedicine.To provide you the opportunity to acquire information on state of the art nanoparticle fabrication, rationale for the design of nanoparticles applied in biology and medicine with particular emphasis on the nanodiagnostics, nanoparticle based drug delivery strategies and nanotechnology applied to treatment of cancer, including nanotoxicity, nanosafety and ethical implications with the use of engineered nanomaterials.To enhance your critical thinking on the factors contributing to opportunities and potential limitations of current methodologies for drug delivery and diagnostic sensing using nanotechnologies in realistic biological environments, and provide you with the opportunities to critically engage with topics of discussion via problem-based learning (PBL) approach. | |
Word count/ duration (if applicable) Guidelines for the word limit of components within the Integrated Portfolio: Laboratory report (communication) – up to 2500 words, i.e. 5-6 pages of the templated structure provided references included. Templates for drafting the Integrated Portfolio are available on the module Blackboard site, under Module information. There are no limits for the number of figures/graphics and tables included. Note that your ability to keep to the assigned word limit will be assessed as one of the criteria of the rubrics for grading the Integrated Portfolio. | |
Feedback arrangements Formative assessment will be employed timely for snapshots/proofs of Portfolio drafts in order to guide improvement. Formative assessment will be offered during the in class dedicated feedback workshop sessions.Formative Portfolio: Turnitin short snapshot of the final review using a templated structure, (individual submission). Turnitin folder for formative assessment is available on module Blackboard site. Feedback will be provided in line with anonymous marking guidance. Following the upload of Portfolio drafts, formative assessment will be provided on your summary and returned to you 15 working days after submission. | |

Reassessment If you fail this assessment, and are eligible for reassessment. You will need to resubmit a failed component of the Integrated Portfolio (same assessment criteria apply) in the next available reassessment period (July 2022). The assessment folder for Reassessments will be set up in due course. For students with accepted personal mitigating circumstances (PMC), this will be your replacement assessment attempt. Please note that there is no late submission period at reassessment (this includes those students who have an accepted PMC request from a previous attempt). | |
