Instructions for Term (Paper Option 1): Gender Socialization in Greeting Cards
Below are the instructions for the first out of 3 term paper options. During the semester, students will complete 1 of 3 term papers. Term Paper Option #1 is not mandatory. Students will have 2 other opportunities to complete a term paper this semester.
Term Paper (Option 1): The objective of this assignment is to apply what we learned in Modules 1 -3 (and accompanying course material to analyze a photo project, Analyzing the Social Construction of Gender Through Greeting Cards Socialization in Greeting Cards, Contributors Jacqueline Clark and Maxine Atkinson (2009), depicting a the socialization of gender in greeting cards. Your job will be to tie in what we’ve learned so far in the course to at least 6/12 images provided in the Analyzing the Social Construction of Gender Through Greeting Cards Socialization in Greeting Cards PowerPoint (pdf).
Visual sociology is a field of research that uses images to explain social phenomena, social construction of reality, social organization, and symbols within social structures and social organization. Your project will use visual sociology to demonstrate you are academically engaged with course material presented in class. Please use your critical faculty to write a 5-paragraph term paper to gain further insight into the art of applying the course material to a new medium.
PARAGRAPH 1- Provide an introductory paragraph, which should include a topic sentence or a couple sentences introducing the topic of the socialization of gender. In the remaining sentences of paragraph 1, provide an essay map, which should include a summary of your arguments from paragraph 2-5. Conclude this paragraph with a thesis or overall argument. Writing paragraph 1 at the end is easier. I suggest that you write this last.
PARAGRAPH 2- Define and discuss the process of the socialization of gender and provide 2 greeting card images, which best illustrates the meaning of this concept and what the process of socialization looks like, using the images and descriptions. Provide evidence from readings and images to support your claims. You should cite course material in this 10-12 sentence paragraph.
PARAGRAPH 3- After reading Module 2 content relevant to theories of gender and sex. Choose a theory that best applies to your analysis of gender. Summarize the theory and choose at least one image that best depicts the theory of choice. You should cite course materials in this 10-12 sentence paragraph.
PARAGRAPH 4- In 10-12 sentences, make a thorough argument for how the images perpetuate or supports stereotypes of Doing Gender and use at least 2 greeting cards as evidence of sustaining those stereotypes. You should cite course material in this 10-12 sentence paragraph.
PARAGRAPH 5- For the final paragraph, discuss what advice would you give American Greetings or Hallmark to address the issue of gender role socialization and the depiction of gender in greeting cards. What are some ideas to provide an alternative to the images depicted in the PowerPoint? You should cite course material in this 7-8 sentence paragraph.
Student expected to use the provided images for your term paper (at least 6 images). Please embed images in the paper so that the instructor can see the images and know what the student is analyzing.
