I kindly ask that you go through the PowerPoints that I’ve attached in order to be able to answer the following questions. No outside sources are required at all. To answer question 1 calculate the ecological deficit or credit explain why you calculated that formula or law that you choose to follow.
Exercise 1
If a country’s or the world’s ecological footprint per person is larger than its biological capacity per person to replenish its renewable resources and to absorb the resulting waste products and pollution, it is said to have an ecological deficit. If the reverse is true, it has an ecological credit or reserve.
- Use the data below to calculate the ecological deficit or credit for various countries.
- Which country has the largest ecological deficit? Why?
- Which country has the largest ecological reserve? Why?
| Country | Biocapacity per person (gha) | Ecological footprint per person (gha) | Ecological reserve (+) or deficit (-) |
| World | 1.8 | 2.2 | 1.8 – 2.2 = -0.4 |
| Japan | 0.7 | 4.4 | |
| India | 0.4 | 0.8 | |
| Canada | 14.5 | 7.6 | |
| UK | 1.6 | 5.6 | |
| Mexico | 1.7 | 2.6 |
Exercise 2
- What changes might take place in the hydrologic cycle (water cycle) if the earth’s climate becomes hotter?
- How might these changes affect life on earth AND your lifestyle?
