All four-unit courses in Communication Studies include a unit of engagement. This unit of engagement is designed to enrich students’ learning experiences and to facilitate student achievement of course learning objectives. Students enrolled in four-unit courses are expected to spend on average 45 hours (average of three hours per week over the course of a regular semester) outside of the classroom to complete engagement activities. The assignment is worth 25% of the overall grade.
Observations – Observe prime-time portrayals of communication across different family types (e.g., African American, European American, Latino/a families, etc.). Identify two family types and then select two weekly prime-time shows for each racial/ethnic family type, and watch a minimum of three episodes of each show. Your report should identify differences and similarities in media representations across family types in terms of communication. Among other matters, you should compare frequencies of father-son, father-daughter, mother-son, and mother-daughter interactions and should analyze differences in communication styles employed in the different families. Also, observe and analyze differences in directness, dramatic style, and formality. Approximately 3-5 pages, 1 inch margins, double spaced, Times New Roman, 12 point font, include title page.
