Final Project
The main goal of this assignment is to research how the evolution history of a basin can control the stratigraphy of depositional sequences, and what information we can get from the stratigraphy itself.
You will do a bibliographical research and find one real case study where we have a good description of the stratigraphic evolution of a sedimentary basin. You will need to research and present the evolution of all, or part, of the sedimentary sequences and pay particular attention on 1) how the sediment moved and distributed inside the basin, and 2) how these processes are represented in the stratigraphic record (e.g., mass transport deposits, delta progradation, etc…). To do so, you may consider more than one of the various techniques used in stratigraphy (litho-, bio- , seismic, etc…).
Using Google, Google Scholar, and this website (https://sci-hub.tw/) you should be able to download papers from the major scientific journals.
Each one of you needs to prepare a 2500 words-long paper (not counting figures and references) illustrating the chosen case study, following the outline of a scientific research paper:
- Introduction of the problem and why is important to investigate it
- Presentation of the geological setting of the investigated area
- Methodology used to conduct the study
- Results of your study/analyses
- Discussion of the results – put them in perspective, what do they mean?
- Conclusions
