Students will complete a Critical Response Essays (CRE) of David Eggers’ The Monk of Mokha. This is not a review summary of the book, but a critical piece of the main themes, and how they inform the students’ understanding of Yemeni society and politics, the Yemeni diaspora in the United States, and the Middle East in general. The paper should be 3 to 5 pages (not including the title page and bibliography). Papers will be graded on the coherence and solidity of the arguments offered. The grade will also be based on the presentation of the different themes in the book, logic, syntax, grammar, spelling, sources used, and general layout of the paper.

Format and Content:

General page format: The paper should be typed on 8.5 by 11-inch paper. Margins should be one inch on all sides of the paper. Please utilize Times New Roman font, 12-point type. Line spacing should be 2. Page numbers should start on the first page after the title page (hence the title page does not count as a page). The text of the paper should be three to five (3-5) pages in length (not including the title page and the page of references). Please utilize the Chicago Manual of Style or MLA formatting.

1. In writing the paper, students should use footnotes and include a full bibliography.
