Assignment One: Collaborative Paper: Roles of Special Educators
For this assignment, as a group, write ONE 6-10 page paper in APA format. The completion of this collaborative paper helps establish a historical and philosophical understanding of special education while using effective communication, consultation and collaborative skills. Please pay attention to guidelines given below. There will be a 10 points deduction from earned grade for every page over the page limit. Page limit does not include cover page, abstract, reference page, tables, charts, graphs, and appendix.
You are to self-enroll in a “Collaborative Group” (at least 4 members). Each member of the group must take-up at least one role. Create a group contract to outline roles and responsibilities of each member. Attached signed copy to final paper. Select a group leader and editor/editors.
Requirements:
- Select at least one peer-reviewed article on the roles of special educators written in the 1970s/1980s, one in 1990s and one present (2000s). Read each article and discuss:
- the roles of special educators in each era
- the major special education laws that impact the roles of special educators in each era (1970s/1980s, 1990s, 2000s)
- the different learning environment/classroom settings/placement used in each era (1970s/1980s, 1990s, 2000s) and its impact on roles
- the various instructional planning/delivery/strategies used in each era (1970s/1980s, 1990s, 2000s)
- the roles of families in each era (1970s/1980s, 1990s, 2000s)
Read, analyze and synthesize information from articles.
For Students Seeking Gifted Endorsement: Select articles from each decade which investigate the role of special educators in gifted classrooms.
- Read “Who Moved my Cheese?” There is a link on Blackboard and in syllabus. Discuss the message in “Who Moved My Cheese?” in connection to the roles of special educators over the decades (1970s/1980s, 1990s, 2000s).
- Based on the message in “Who Moved My Cheese?,” the peer-reviewed articles, course readings, and personal experience write the group’s collective historical and philosophical understanding of special education.
- Include a Reference page in APA format to include all articles and/or books used.
- On completion of Collaborative Paper complete “Peer Assessment Collaboration Rubric” on Blackboard to evaluate each member of your group.
