- Is there a disorder that therapy does not work on? Explain
- Trends in society make up a great deal in clinical psychology. Remember it was not until the early seventies that APA removed homosexuality from being classified as a mental disorder. Now years less than fifty years later there are a lot of changes that surround gender identity. This is a topic that serves for much controversy and as times evolve it is important that clinical psychologists remain in the loop so to speak. I think that it is also important that clinical professionals not allow the pressure from the media or their peers’ belief systems to cloud judgment in determining what is fact and what is opinion.
Thoughts on this?
- An example of a cultural phenomenon is koro is a syndrome that is culturally specific in Asians males. This syndrome delusional disorder in which an individual has an overpowering belief that one’s genitalia are retracting and will disappear, despite the lack of any true longstanding changes to the genitals.
What are other examples of culture that would need to be taken into account in treatment?
- With all the changes in our world the last 20 years or so, there is more change to come, what do you predict for the following categories in the upcoming 20 years…..
- a) Definitions of family…will this change?
- b) Multicultural and diversity issues…what will we see?
- c) Technological advances…what more can come our way???
