Watch the video on high fructose corn syrup metabolism and answer the following questions in a 2-3 page reflection paper on the video:
1) What did you think of the video, did you feel the speakers arguments against sugar and fructose were compelling? Do you feel it will change the way you view fructose consumption? (1pt)
2) What were the speaker’s main contentions on how fructose was metabolized? In other words why did he call fructose a “poison”? Please explain in detail the biochemical pathway that starts with fructose and ends with fat. (4pts) I expect details here.
3) Why does fructose not satisfy our feeling of hunger according to the speaker? (1pt)
4) Why does the speaker believe fruit is an OK source of fructose, in otherwords what does fruit also have that offsets the fructose in it? (1pt)
5) Thinking about the interaction of fructose and insulin, what value do you think there might be in consuming fructose as an athlete looking to recover energy wise each workout but not wanting to gain muscle. Gaining muscle is stimulated by insulin. (2pts)
Please try and write the paper as a paper and not just a collection of answers to these questions. You can work in the answers to all the questions as you write, sectioning off each question is not desired. Try and synthesize all the information from the video and answer the questions in a well written response paper
SECTION 2
Using your book and my video, provide a detailed flowchart on the sequence of events from the entering of a foodstuff (say a burrito) into the mouth and its final destiny leading out the anus. Be sure to include each organ along the way and any relevant hormones, enzymes etc. at each stop. You can organize the sequence of digestion as a table, bullet points or flowchart function found in Word (example below). Be aware this is a 10pt assignment, I expect details at each step, the example below is incomplete and I provided questions about facts you may want to include at each of the steps, there are obviously more steps through the small and large intestine (including all the organs contributing enzymes, hormones and other molecules like bile along the way). Please list each segment of the small and large intestine. When in doubt, INCLUDE details, no details = no points. DO NOT answer this question verbatim from your book, make the answer your own. Learn, don’t just regurgitate.
