Fall 2016 Service Design Project
There are key concepts from the assigned reading that need to be included within the project.
Design Thinking is a process.
You have taken part in numerous steps of this process already.
Empathy- You need to come from the position of the customer. It is easy to see this. You are able to describe the customers problems, worries, issues, etc. You demonstrate that you understand why they are currently under utilizing a product or service currently…you are able to discuss what pain points they have when they try to use a product, etc. You are trying to design to solve these issues…empathize mode is about understanding people.
Through the interview process and research, you begin to be able to empathize and then define the explicit expression of the problem that you are addressing.
Define is so important because it is the definition of the right problem to address…you have spent considerable effort learning about the people and their issues, now you need to crystalize that into what problem are you solving for them…not from the university perspective.
Idea generation…you have looked at this problem from angles. You have come up with initial ideas…show the evolution from those ideas to the particular prototype that you are proposing. Remember the prototype needs to be a part of the big picture, but it should be something small and easily implementable. It shouldn’t cost much money, if anything at all. Your goal is to come up with a testable prototype, so you can prove the efficacy of your big picture proposal. This is really hard. You have done a lot of work that fits within this model, now you need to begin to pitch it to others.
Elements
- Introduction
- Prototypable Solution
- Defined Problem
- Big Picture re Alumni Engagement Strategy
- Details of Prototype & How to solve it
Deliverable
A 6-10 minute pitch of a prototypable solution that stands alone in an electronic format.
You will be graded based upon:
- evidence of the design thinking process in presentation
- coherence and cohesion of the pitch
- connection of your solution to the defined problem
