Instructions

In this unit, the topics of organizational development and managing resistance to change are covered. Organizational development (OD) is a discipline that aids companies in formulating and implementing strategies necessary to ensure their future sustainability. This unit’s case illustrates the efforts of a non-profit, faith-based continuing care retirement community (CCRC) to ensure its sustainability by retaining the services of a consulting firm to aid them in developing a long-range planning. In addition, this case makes clear that the phenomenon which leads to a resistance to change is present at all levels within a firm and that if unchecked can have severe and undesirable implication for the organization.

Case Synopsis: This case focuses on a consultant who encounters resistance to change, questionable financial management practices, and a lack of business acumen in the board of directors. It isn’t uncommon to find board members lacking business acumen or even a fundamental understanding of the industry for which the company is apart. This puts senior leadership in the position of educating the board to the point where they are capable of executing their due diligence in terms of setting organizational policy. This case illustrates the fact that resistance to change can take place at any level within an organization. Like all employees, board members have an opinion of the direction the organization should head and a rational for to support their position. This doesn’t mean that the rational is grounded in reality or well supported by institutional and market research. Many times it’s just a gut feeling. This is true even when the board retains the services of a well-respected consulting firm to assist in the long-range planning process. Even when the consultant presents logical and well-supported suggestions, if they conflict with the opinions of board members, then resistance is likely to result.

Directions

Carefully read Mueller-O’Keefe Memorial Home and Retirement Village, Case # 10, located on page 151, in your Cases in Health Services Management (5th ed.) book.  After reading the case study, please complete the following task:

At the conclusion of the meeting with the board, Cantwell, the OD consultant, became uneasy. As he left for home, he wondered what went wrong. How could he further help the committee to decide or to take action? He could not help but think about Polk’s faith in “seat of the pants” decisions. He had done the best job he could. He hoped to be able to assist the board in implementing the selected strategies. Acting as an OD consultant who has been assigned to work with Cantwell to successfully complete the long-range planning project for Mueller-O’Keefe Memorial Home and Retirement Village, formulate an action plan that will aid the leadership team in making the best possible strategic decisions in order to position their organization for long-term success while managing anticipated resistance to change.

The students are expected to carefully read the case study. This action plan should include specifics and supporting rationale. In addition, the action plan should thoroughly and explicitly address the assignment expectations. The action plan should reflect a higher level cognitive processing (analysis, synthesis, and evaluation), which is essential for someone being prepared to serve in an operational capacity within the healthcare and related industry. There is no minimum number of references that need to be utilized to support the completion of this assignment; however, it is generally understood that any good case study analysis will incorporate the appropriate quality and quantity of scholarly sources to support any suppositions and recommendations. The submission will not exceed four (4) pages in length, excluding the title and references pages. The document must adhere to the APA writing style. Finally, the document should be prepared as a Microsoft Word document and uploaded under the correct unit assignment page. Emailing the assignment to the instructor will not be accepted and the late policy will be applied.
