Labor Day
The movie Labor Day is a movie set in a rural town in 1987, where a mother Adele and her son Henry lived quietly isolated from the rest of their friends and family. On an unusual afternoon, the mother and her son traveled into town to buy school clothes at the Price Mart and found themselves in a situation fraught with terror and conflict to help an escaped criminal find refuge in their home. Adele and Henry were initially prejudice toward Frank as he was an escaped convict serving an 18-year sentence for murdering his wife. Adele relied upon her instincts and saw the person inside rather than the person being judged and portrayed on the news. She had a unique empathy and ability to relate. Her own self-concept as a mother and romantic were often misjudged by others due to her continued miscarriages over the years. This put her in a state of depression and isolation and caused others to effortlessly judge her and stereotype her with a mental illness. Adele suffered from counterfactual thinking and her life played like a broken record of what could have been, if only she hadn’t lost her babies, her husband, and her joy. Frank and Adele found each other and healed old wounds that no one else could see or understand through the simple formula known as love.
