Title of the Research project is : The antimicrobial properties of Doxycycline-Montmorillonites composites.
Aim: to find the antimicrobial properties of different types of montmorillonites ie:/ montmorillonites containing different ions adsorped to doxycycline to form a composite and to investigate their antimicrobial / antibacterial properties.
The main part of your proposal will be your introduction and this is what you have been concentrating on with your literature review.
The proposal should include:
Literature review on the topic – what has been done previously, Validated methods,
Literature on existing research – and their results.
The project will include data collection and analysis (design > initiate > complete a research project in an area related to pharmaceutical science – design dosage form). My research project title is the antimicrobial properties of doxycycline-montmorillonites composites.
The research proposal should be of 3000 words up to 8 A4 pages it should include:
Introduction;
Aim of the Project;
Objectives of the Project;
Methodology including Data Collection and Analysis;
Timescale;
Project Team;
Resources;
References.
Structure of the Proposal
The report should include the following headed sections (these may be adapted as required by your project):
Title and Author
Use the Title Page, attached to the end of this document
Introduction – – – – MOST IMPORTANT PART OF THE PROPOSAL – – –
This should provide a thorough background to the subject to allow the reader an understanding of why the project is being undertaken. It should be based on a full literature review of the subject. The number of references included will clearly depend on the nature of the project but the introduction will normally include around 10-20 key references to previous work. References may be in Vancouver, by agreement between yourself and your Principal Supervisor.
Aim of the Project
The Aim should provide an overview statement on what the project should achieve.
Objectives of the Project
The Objectives should provide a list of specific endpoints that should be met in order to achieve the stated aim.
Methodology including Data Collection and Analysis
This should include an outline of the proposed methods that will be used. Where appropriate, these will be based on previously validated methods and will be referenced where possible. Where appropriate, copies of data collection forms etc. should be included as an appendix. Methods should normally be comprehensive enough to allow the reader to be able to repeat the study. However, the methods described in the proposal are unlikely to be at that advanced a stage.
The data collection and analysis section should indicate what the expected outcomes might be and how they will be analysed.
Timescale
The timescale should include work to be completed in semester one of the final year and the time course, in semester two, for data collection and analysis and writing up. All key stages in the project should be listed in the timescale.
Some students may choose to use a matrix system for their timescale. This is not obligatory but whatever method is used, the indication of what should be achieved at each stage should be clearly stated.
An example of the timescale is given below. If you use this style, YOU MUST ADAPT AND COMPLETE IT APPROPRIATELY FOR YOUR PROJECT. This example is for illustration only; it is not a real example for a project.

Project Team
This should be included, even if it comprises only yourself and the Principal Supervisor.
Resources
This section must provide a list of resources required to complete the project. It will variably include items such as laboratory equipment, consumables, computer hardware and software, traveling expenses etc. The resources listed must include an accurate or estimated cost against each item.
References
References should be presented, accurately, in the style on the Vancouver
Research Proposal Headings:
- Title, Your name, Supervisors
- Introduction (based on literature review)
- Methodology for literature review
- Aim(s)
- Objectives
- Methodology and proposed analysis of results
- Timescale
- Project team
- Resources
- References
Introduction is the most important part of the proposal and should include lots of literature reviews. Literature reviews play a:
- A vital component of research
- Computerisation and databases have made literature review more simple
- What has been done previously?
- What validated methods can be used?
- How do my results compare and complement existing research?
- Is my work worth publishing?
LEARNING OUTCOMES
- Locate and critically evaluate appropriate scientific literature.
- Design a proposal for a scientific research project
- Select the relevant statistics for a specific purpose
- Design and perform experiments
- Demonstrate competence in objective observation, data analysis and summarising data succinctly
PLEASE SEE THE OTHER DOCUMENT ATTACHED FOR HOW THE PROPOSAL SHOULD BE ASSESSED AND THAT 50 % IS ON THE INTRODUCTION. PLEASE READ THE SECOND DOCUMENT.
