COUN 8135

Clinical Supervision

Final Project Guidelines

In your Final Project, you will synthesize current approaches to clinical supervision into your unique vision of practice as a clinical supervisor. You will draw on relevant literature, research, practice, and standards of clinical supervision in the development of this project.

Your Final Project must be presented as a 10- to 20-page (not including references, title page, or abstract), double-spaced, APA (American Psychological Association)-formatted paper. Your paper should demonstrate a journal quality piece of writing, suitable for submission to a peer-reviewed professional journal and representative of adequate content for your academic portfolio. A journal quality manuscript adheres to guidelines for paper submissions of leading peer-reviewed journals such as Counselor Education & Supervision (CES). Students can also access manuscript guidelines via the American Counseling Association (ACA) website. Guidelines for submission to peer-reviewed journals are also accessible by obtaining a hardcopy of the journal.

All papers should conform to the 6th edition APA Publication Manual rules of convention. You are expected to follow APA guidelines to reduce bias in language. Please consult the APA manual for specifics related to the reduction of bias in language. Papers should be well-written, demonstrating clarity of language and thought, with appropriate transition statements and use of grammar.

Please submit a copy of the ACA journal manuscript guidelines that you have read when you submit your Final Project in Week 11.

Your Final Project should include the following:

  • A minimum of 10-20 pages of text (not to exceed 25 pages inclusive of title page, abstract, content, references, tables, figures and appendices).

  • Consistent and correct use of APA format throughout the paper, including title page, abstract, and reference list.
  • Your abstract should follow CES guidelines for length of 50 to no more than 100 words. Use Times Roman 12-point font.

  • Footnotes should not be used.

  • You are expected to provide accurate citations, quotations, and references in APA format. Please remember that quotations longer than 300 words require you to secure permission from the original author or the owner of the work.

  • References inclusive and independent of course reading materials and resources.

Your Final Project should address the following content areas:

  • An explanation of your personal psychotherapy-based model of clinical supervision. Include your rationale for this foundation and a thoughtful analysis of how your psychotherapy-based model informs your practice. Note: Although this model does not have to be one outlined in the textbook, the model should be specifically derived from a counseling theory and applied to clinical supervision.

  • An explanation of the supervision-specific model to which you ascribe. Explain how this model is effective and identify related research that supports your adoption of the model. Note: Although this model does not have to be one outlined in the textbook, the model should be specifically designed for supervision, not grounded in counseling theory.

  • Attention to the integration of your selected psychotherapy-based model and supervision-specific model as applied to clinical supervision throughout your manuscript.

  • Supervisory roles and responsibilities related to your supervision philosophy, attending to the integration both psychotherapy-based and supervision-specific components. Include an analysis of how a supervisor, such as yourself, applies the models in practice. For example, what are the specific supervisory tasks or functions? Are there inconsistencies between your selected models? If so, make sure to attend to how you wil reconcile these differences.
  • A description of an ideal relationship between supervisor and supervisee per your philosophy, grounded in your chosen models. For example, how is the working alliance established and maintained? In what ways is this different from other empirically supported supervision models?
  • A description of the techniques and interventions associated with your philosophy, grounded in your chosen models, including research evidence that supports the integration of these techniques with your supervision practice.
  • Ethical and multicultural considerations in your philosophy, grounded in your chosen models. Include a statement that addresses how your supervision philosophy is relevant to social change and advocacy for the profession of counseling supervision. How can your supervision approach make a difference?
  • An explanation of how evaluation is conducted. For example, at what points in the supervision relationship does evaluation occur? Include the types of evaluation and how evaluative findings are communicated to the supervisee.
  • Technology relevant to the application of your supervision approach, through the lens of your chosen models.

Your Final Project will be graded on a 20-point scale and is worth 30% of your final grade.

Although the Final Project is not to be submitted until Day 7 of Week 11, you should become familiar with the project requirements and have them in mind as you proceed through the course. Many of the Discussions and Application Assignments relate to and can be of use to you in writing your Final Project.

The Final Project will be evaluated according to all four indicators in the Application Assignment and Final Project Writing Rubric, located in Course Info. Information on scholarly writing may be found in the APA Publication Manual and at the WaldenU Writing Center website. Also, see the “Academic Honesty Policy: See Walden University’s “Code of Conduct and Academic Integrity” in the Guidelines and Policies area.”

The Final Project is due on Day 7 of Week 11. See the Week 11 Final Project area for submission details.
