First of all, I would like you to read Conkey and Spector (1984) and Blackmore (2011) which will give you an introduction into theoretical concepts of gender and identity. Second, choose at least TWO articles from those provided and TWO (You must choose an academic article or book chapter) you find on your own to address the topic of gender and identity in ancient civilizations. In particular, I would like you to address the question of REPRESENTATION. How are identities represented in artifacts and in art and iconography? How do rulers/elites use these representations to portray and reinforce particular ideologies? How do these representations reflect reality? And finally, how do contemporary ideologies regarding gender and identity influence our interpretations? There are a lot of questions here, and you do not necessarily need to address ALL of them. Chose one or two (or four!) of the questions that are most interesting to you.
