This assignment asks you to expand on the literature review from your research proposal (see attached Final). You must find additional sources, so that you have a total of at least eight scholarly sources. Your expanded literature review should take the form of a coherent whole that discusses what is already known on the topic and culture, and what your research will add. You will also refine your research question into a succinct thesis statement that incorporates anthropological theory. An example of a Literature Review (attached) is provided here for your review. Be sure to review the annotation in the sample because it provides guidance that will help you when you write your own literature
Submit the following in a single document:
- A thesis statement for the project. After having completed several hours of fieldwork you are now ready to move from vague questions to a concrete draft of the thesis statement for the fieldwork and Ethnographic Paper. You may have begun with a vague question or idea such as, “I want to observe the culture of homeless people in Central Park.” After having spent several hours completing participant-observation and an ethnographic interview, you are now ready to move to a more sophisticated level of inquiry. The thesis statement for your ethnography should utilize anthropological or social theory to generate more subtle social and cultural inquiry. Theoretical concepts and frameworks will be part of moving from analysis to interpretation in your Final Paper: it is the framework that situates your study in general anthropological theories about how cultures work. You may need to review your notes and text from your prior theory course. Examples of thesis statements might be, “I will argue that Douglas’ theory of ‘matter out of place’ applies to homeless people in Central Park, and that homeless are categorized by non-homeless as ‘matter out of place’” or “I wish to discuss how the use of space by homeless people in the park reflects larger cultural constructions of ‘purity’ and ‘danger.’”
- An expanded literature review encompassing at least eight scholarly sources and explaining the theoretical concepts or framework
